Environmentalists have expressed concern over a Cabinet decision to revoke compulsory acquisition of a large plot of land close to Paralimni Lake which falls within the Natura 2000 zone.
In an announcement, the Cyprus Green Party said the lake is home to many species of rare birds such as the natrix cypriaca and as such must be protected from all forms of development.
"Unfortunately construction has been allowed on the north side of Paralimni Lake by one of the landowners who is a large property developer. This is unacceptable as the lake has already been declared a protected nature zone by the EU."
The Greens said the decision is a serious blow for environmental preservation in Cyprus and will also enrage owners of smaller plots of land who have had their plots compulsorily acquired by the state.
"We have already warned the government that such decision will create a negative response from landowners as it allows others to take advantage of the situation."
