Cyprus and Qatar have agreed to increase flights between the two countries.
According to an official announcement on Tuesday, the relevant agreement was signed on Sunday in Doha by a representation headed by Communications Minister Tasos Mitsopoulos.
According to the announcement, the signing followed two days of talks.
It has already been agreed that Qatar Airways will from April 29 begin regular flights to Cyprus four times per week.
The new agreement sees Qatar afforded the ‘fifth freedom’ which allows an airline to carry revenue traffic between foreign countries as a part of services connecting the airline's own country. It is the right to carry passengers from one's own country to a second country, and from that country to a third country (and so on.) The agreement sees this fifth freedom extended to Qatar for two European routes, excluding Greece, which will be made public following a study being carried out by the involved airlines.
The fifth freedom was also extended for the transportation of cargo from Cyprus to other routes.
The agreement, in addition, sees Cyprus Airways and Qatar Airways committing to meet within 30 days to agree on a code sharing agreement as a first step in further cooperation, the announcement said.
