LARNACA - A 48-year-old man was sentenced on Tuesday to 18 months in prison after being found guilty of causing a death through reckless and dangerous driving.
The Larnaca District Court said the defendant’s irresponsible actions without a doubt caused the accident that led to the death of a 20-year-old Georgian motorcyclist.
The court heard that 1.00am on April 6, 2011 the defendant took an abrupt left turn at Spyros Kyprianou intersection and cut off the motorcyclist who was going straight from the opposite direction.
Judge Christiana Parpota said the defendant fled the scene after the collision which immediately killed the victim. Police later determined that the motorist had been driving without valid insurance or road tax.
The defendant who was driving a company car at the time of the collision tried to blame the accident on his employer.
“You gave four false statements to the police regarding your involvement in the crash,” said the judge who found the driver guilty of four charges.
Eighteen witnesses testified in the trial.
