Doctors at Nicosia General Hospital on Friday morning described the condition of Defence Minister Tasos Mitsopoulos as "critical." He is thought to have suffered an aneurysm.
Mitospoulos was earlier on Friday rushed by ambulance to hospital after reportedly fainting at his ministry.
Mitsopoulos was made Defence Minister last week in the reshuffle. He was previously Communications Minister. He is understood to be undergoing medical examinations.
President Anastasiades is expected to return early from Brussels.
UPDATED - Neurosurgeon Moisis Lambrou told reporters that the minister suffered a brain hemorrhage which also caused him to have a heart attack.
Mitsopoulos was found unconscious in his office by his secretary, who called an ambulance.
The president’s scheduled press conference in Brussels has been postponed while he is being constantly updated on the defence minister’s condition.
UPDATED- Mitsopoulos was undergoing neurosurgery shortly before 1pm on Friday, according to reports from Nicosia General Hospital.
