President Anastasiades left the EU Council earlier today and is expected to fly back to Cyprus shortly, following news that Defence Minister Tasos Mitsopoulos has suffered a brain aneurysm and is in critical condition.
The President has also postponed the scheduled press conference and is being constantly updated on the minister’s condition.
Mitsopoulos was operated on by a team of neurosurgeons at Nicosia General Hospital led by Dr Akis Lambrou who inserted an intracerebral catheter to will regulate intracranial pressure.
The minister has been intubated and remains in critical condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
Head of neurosurgery at Ygeia hospital in Athens Alexandros Andreou, as well as a medical team from Israel are expected to arrive within the day to decide on the next steps.
