LARNACA – The funeral of popular Defence Minister Tasos Mitsopoulos got underway on Monday morning in the presence of Cypriot and Greek officials as well as hundreds of friends and relatives.
The Greek government is represented by Defence Minister Demetris Avramopoulos as President Anastasiades will deliver the eulogy.
Mitsopoulos, aged 48, earned the love of ordinary people and respect across the political spectrum for his integrity and ethos.
Tributes, from political figures to the man in the street, spoke of the humility and modesty which characterised Mitsopoulos throughout his political career.
There were expressions of respect and appreciation in the book of condolences opened at the Defence Ministry on Sunday as well as on scraps of paper placed with some flowers outside his home in Aradippou.
The funeral is at the Church of Ayios Georgios Kontos in Larnaca with members of the government and officers of the National Guard accompanying the coffin to the church.
