NICOSIA - UN Secretary-General special adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer flies to the island on Monday evening to bid his farewell to the two leaders in separate meetings on Thursday.
He is to also give a bi-communal press conference on Thursday at Ledra Palace at the divided capital’s green line.
Last week, Australian-born Downer – who has been appointed his country’s High Commissioner to London – was in New York.
“He was providing a thorough assessment to the UN chief and his key advisers on the state of play in the Cyprus negotiations,” said an UNFICYP statement in Nicosia.
“Along with recommendations for the future, as he prepares to step down as Special Adviser in mid-April,” it added.
President Nicos Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu are scheduled to meet face-to-face again at the end of the month.
On Monday afternoon, the two appointed negotiators on the UN-brokered Cyprus peace talks are to hold fresh talks in Nicosia under the auspices of acting special adviser Lisa Buttenheim.
The meeting between negotiators Andreas Mavroyiannis for the Greek Cypriot side and Kudret Ozersay for the Turkish Cypriots is of an exploratory nature. Their last meeting was held on March 14.
