LIMASSOL – The government tries to speed up the process of searching and drilling for natural gas within Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone, Energy Minister George Lakkotrypis said on Tuesday.
“And we hope to have positive results soon. The prospects are encouraging but patience is necessary,” he also told journalists in the coastal city.
Italian-Korean conglomerate ENI-COGAS and US firm Noble Energy are due to start drilling at leased plots within 2014, and French TOTAL will follow suit in early 2015, Lakkotrypis said.
“Noble Energy will carry a new search drill at plot 12 or Aphrodite plus additional drilling in a different plot,” he clarified and warned that the process is time-consuming.
“But we shouldn’t despair, we should be patient. Exploitation of natural gas is different from that of oil because oil can be used immediately while natural gas needs additional infrastructure and patience,” he said.
