Police arrested two men late last night after a high-speed chase that saw a bomb and a gun thrown out of the window of the moving car during the pursuit.
According to investigators, the chase was sparked by a routine drugs inspection on the Nicosia-Larnaca motorway. The two suspects, said to be from Pera Chorio and Dali, sped away from police officers before throwing an explosive device and a hunting rifle out of the moving vehicle just shy of the village of Lympia. The furious pursuit finally ended with the suspects slamming into three police patrol cars.
Following the arrests, a section of the Larnaca-Nicosia motorway was cordoned off as Bomb Disposal Unit officers were brought in to diffuse the bomb. It was safely detonated just before midnight but not before traffic – heading towards Larnaca - was brought to a near-standstill as one of the motorway lanes was closed off.
