A love cheat suspected of stealing €5,000 worth of gold jewellery from a woman he met on Facebook has been remanded for six days in police custody.
Speaking before the Nicosia District Court, police investigator Thomas Triantou said the 40-year-old suspect from Larnaca was arrested after admitting robbing a 39-year-old woman with whom he had a brief affair.
The suspect is said to have struck up an online relationship with the victim after meeting her on the social messaging site on February 24. After meeting in person a few days later the suspect temporarily moved into the woman’s flat in the capital and all seemed rosy for a while. However, on April 3 he vanished without a trace and stopped replying to the victim’s calls and messages. Police were alerted by the woman the following day when she realised that all her jewellery had gone missing from a bedroom drawer. After tracking down and questioning the suspect in Aradippou police found out that he had been living a second life with another woman whilst also dating the victim. Police interviewed the second woman who claimed the suspect had recently sold several pieces of jewellery to a local goldsmith. According to the investigator, during a second interview with police the suspect confessed to stealing four pieces of jewellery to pay off his mounting debts.
