LIMASSOL -- A 22-year-old Indian housemaid was arrested in Limassol on Wednesday after she allegedly abandoned the two-year-old baby that was in her care.
According to Limassol police spokesman Yiannis Soteriades, the authorities were alerted in the afternoon after the baby’s mother returned from work and found the toddler alone in the house.
The spokesman added that during questioning the suspect said she was unhappy working for the couple that employed her and decided to leave the job without informing them first.
“She also claims that she left shortly before the mother was due to arrive home and that the baby was left unattended for less than one hour.”
The suspect who began working for the family in July was released after having been charged with abandoning a child. She is set to answer to the charge which carries a maximum prison sentence of five years before the Limassol District Court on April 16.
