NICOSIA – Attorney General Costas Clerides on Thursday lodged an appeal before the Supreme Court against the release of three members of far right organisation ELAM following their arrests in connection with a violent demonstration last month.
According to the announcement by the Legal Services, police are continuing to investigate the suspects and other individuals over their alleged involvement in a violent brawl with police outside a cultural centre in Limassol that disrupted a speech by former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.
The AG also clarified that ELAM is not a registered political party as its original application for party status in 2010 was rejected by the Ministry of Interior for failing to meet requirements.
Former police chief Michalis Papageorgiou was ordered to step down from his position following criticism over the police handling of the demonstration.
