NICOSIA - A Syrian man has been sentenced to seven months in prison after pleading guilty to systematically beating his Greek Cypriot partner’s seven-year-old son with a wooden clothes hanger.
The Nicosia District Court heard from medical experts that the child suffers from psychological distress after being subjected to regular beatings which left his body covered in bruises.
On one occasion the defendant struck the child so hard that the hanger broke and caused cuts on the boy’s thighs when he continued to beat him with it.
In handing down the sentence Judge Stella Messiou said a just society cannot tolerate violence against defenceless children.
