NICOSIA – Interior Minister Socrates Hasikos has officially declared Friday, May 2, as the day for candidacies to be submitted for the upcoming European Parliament elections.
This is what an official announcement said on Thursday, adding that the island’s six MEPs will be elected on Sunday, May 25.
The Minister has also appointed Constantinos Nicolaides as chief returning officer of the elections, and Demetris Demtriou his assistant.
The decree has been published in the state’s official gazette, the announcement also said.
The overall number of registered voters is close to 552.500 with some 6.500 being EU nationals.
The data on EU nationals is based on the numbers who voted back in the 2011 municipal elections.
At the same time, a total of 5424 new voters have been registered – 3862 are Greek Cypriots and 1552 EU nationals. Another five are Turkish Cypriots living in the free area.
As for the number of overseas Cypriots interested to cast a vote in May, that is 6316, the elections service has said.
At least 13 overseas polling stations will be set up in a total of three countries – Greece, Britain and Belgium.
