Blood reserves for transfusion purposes are extremely low and there is a need to raise public awareness regarding donation, Health Minister Philippos Patsalis said yesterday.
Speaking after a blood drive organised at the ministry yesterday by the blood donation coordinating committee and the blood centre, the minister stressed the increased need for blood at all centres.
The blood drive is organised at the ministry twice a year.
Meanwhile, head of the blood donation department at Engomi Medical Centre Socrates Menelaou told The Cyprus Daily that the blood reserves at all blood banks have dropped following the Easter break.
“Everything went smoothly over Easter with both scheduled and emergency transfusions but after five days of the blood banks being closed the reserves have started to decrease and therefore it is important to build them back up, as there is the weekend ahead and also the May 1 holiday,” Menelaou said.
In Nicosia blood donations can be made at the blood donation department on the first floor of Engomi Medical Centre from 7.30am to 8pm daily and from 8am to 2pm on Saturdays.
In other towns blood banks operate at the district General Hospitals from 7.30am to 2.30pm.
