FAMAGUSTA - A 21-year-old Swedish tourist has been arrested and charged with falsely accusing a man of sexually assaulting her on a beach in Ayia Napa.
Police confirmed Friday that the tourist confessed to having consensual intercourse with one of the four men who were remanded in custody in line with the investigation that was launched Monday following her false allegations.
Authorities initially remanded a Greek Cypriot man and a Romanian national in connection with the case. They were released from custody due to lack of evidence with police then proceeding to arrest two other Greek Cypriot men over the rape allegations.
The woman reportedly told investigators she fabricated the story because she was embarrassed over what her friends would think of her consensual sexual conduct with one of the four men.
The tourist was charged on Friday before the Paralimni District Court with making a false rape claim and perverting the course of justice.
Her sentencing is scheduled to take place on May 5. The Swede was escorted to Nicosia Central Prisons where she will remain until the court date after she said she was unable to pay the €1,000 bail fee.
