LARNACA - The second Arts & Crafts Festival – by the Sea, at Ammos Beach Bar on the McKenzie strip will be taking place on Thursday, May 1.
The event – which combines handmade and vintage (recycled) goods with music – is designed to be ‘beach festival’ that all the family can enjoy, whilst showcasing artists, crafters and designers who are able to sell their unique items at reasonable prices.
The first festival took place in March this year and included around 30 exhibitors, which has increased to 40 this time round. At each festival the exhibitors, type of goods and the entertainment will be different. Music for the Thursday event will be provided by DJs Pavlov and Panama Cardoon, and will start at 3pm, whilst the stalls will be open from 10am till 10pm.
Co-organiser - in cooperation with Ammos - Helen Evangelou, says she wanted to create an event with a real Cyprus vibe: “I have been to lots of markets and craft fairs abroad and on the island but none were by the sea. I really feel that Cyprus and sea go together which was the inspiration for creating an event with that sunny Cyprus feeling. Mckenzie is perfect for capturing the atmosphere as the beach is not interrupted by a road, so our event is literally ‘on the sea’.”
Helen is also keen to stress that all the goods are reasonably priced, starting from just €2, and that it is more than just ‘arts and crafts’ as the exhibitors include furniture makers and clothes designers, as well as art, pottery, jewellery, home wares and other traditionally exhibited handmade items. Although the criterion for items featured is to be handmade, there are also some vintage items which have been revamped.
Helen says the event is for everyone: “We like to time our festivals with bank holidays so that people have something to see and do when everything else is shut. Because of the location, children can play on the beach and visitors can have a drink or food at Ammos too for a complete day out.”
The next festival will take place on June 9; thereafter there will be festivals in September, October and November this year. Ammos undertake the entertainment, which will include live singers in the future, promising ‘something different and special, every time.’
