Three people, two men and a woman - have been arrested on suspicion of taking part in sham marriages in the Nicosia District.
According to the police, undercover male and female officers posing as brides and grooms made the arrests at a municipality in the Nicosia District on Tuesday after receiving information that a marriage of convenience was about to take place.
Police said that during questioning the female suspect – a Romanian national - admitted that she visited Cyprus to take part in a sham marriage for the fee of €1000.
Upon further inspection it was determined that the men, both from Pakistan, were in possession of fake identification and are illegally residing in Cyprus.
Police are currently trying to determine if the suspects are part of a wider sham marriages ring based in Cyprus.
Most cases of marriages of convenience involve asylum seekers and visiting citizens from other EU countries who come to the island to get married for a fee and often leave immediately.
