NICOSIA – A total of 61 hopefuls are submitting on Friday their candidacies for the European Parliament’s elections on Sunday, May 25.
The official ceremony begun at 9:00 in the morning at Hilton Hotel in Nicosia and is expected to round up at noon.
Cyprus will elect six MEPs and out of the 61 runners – party-affiliated and independent – six are Turkish Cypriots.
The overall number of registered voters is close to 552.500 with some 6.500 being EU nationals.
The data on EU nationals is based on the numbers who voted back in the 2011 municipal elections.
At the same time, a total of 5424 new voters have been registered – 3862 are Greek Cypriots and 1552 EU nationals. Another five are Turkish Cypriots living in the free area.
As for the number of overseas Cypriots interested to cast a vote in May, that is 6316, the elections service has said.
At least 13 overseas polling stations will be set up in a total of three countries – Greece, Britain and Belgium.
