A 53-year-old Cypriot underwent a successful heart transplant at Onassis Cardiac Surgery Centre in Athens on Sunday, April 27, the hospital has announced.
The recipient who suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy had been on a waiting list since June 2011 and was on a heart support system for the last 13 months.
The donor was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit at Patras University General Hospital.
The transplant was performed by the transplant team at Onassis Cardiac Surgery Centre led by head of the transplant department Petros Sfyrakis.
The centre would like to thank the donor’s family, as well as the medical and administrative staff at Patras University General Hospital and particularly the director Charalambos Mponano, head of the transplant surgical department Dionysios Karavias, Demetris Goumenos in the nephrology department and director of the ICU Fodini Flingou.
The transplant programme at the Onassis centre has performed a total of 123 heart transplants on 122 patients. There are currently 32 people on the waiting list, of which 12 are using mechanical heart support systems.
Since 1998 ten patients on the programme have received heart donations from Cyprus, while nine Cypriot patients have received heart transplants at the centre.
