NICOSIA – UN Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman on Monday met President Anastasiades to talk about the steps forward toward a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem.
He told journalists at the presidential palace after the morning talks: “We just had an excellent meeting to talk about the steps forward toward a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem”.
He added: “This is my first trip to Cyprus in my capacity as UN Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs, and I was able to convey to his Excellency, the Secretary General’s strong support for the joint declaration of February 11”.
Feltman also said that on behalf of the Secretary General he had expressed their appreciation to Anastasiades for his leadership and vision in promoting the conclusion of that February document.
And for working with Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu toward the achievement of that February 11 declaration.
“The United Nations remains committed to working with the leaders and the people in order to achieve a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue,” he also said.
The joint declaration agreed between Anastasiades and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu highlighted key principles of a federated Cyprus and kick-started the stalled Cyprus peace talks.
But the process appears to be quite bumpy as the international community seems keen to maintain the momentum.
