A young Omonia fan, who posted insults on his Facebook page earlier this week about the death of a rival APOEL fan, was taken to hospital with serious injuries on Friday after being attacked by a hooded gang.
According to the announcement by Nicosia football club Omonia, the incident took place at the 14-year-old’s school and that, according to Omonia, the attackers were said to be a gang of 15 hooded assailants wearing APOEL clothing.
The teenager had received constant threats from rival APOEL fans after he posted a picture of the car accident that had killed a 16-year-old APOEL fan and seriously injured others accompanied by insulting comments. Omonia claim that the attack was made in retaliation and that not even the deputy headmaster at the school, who was also injured, was able to stop it.
“The youngster, despite admitting his mistake, apologising and removing his comment, was not spared from criminal retaliation in which he was barbarically attacked in his school”, read a club announcement before then calling on their own fans not to retaliate and escalate further tensions.”
