Dhekelia's Joint Services Golf Club launched a ten-day Festival of Golf to celebrate its 50th anniversary and the new name on the Club's Cyprus Open Golf winners' board is Tony Laslett. Tony was the former professional of Bergen Hohne Golf Club in northern Germany and is now settled in Cyprus.
True to its Joint Service membership, the winner of the two-day 'Weekender' competition was Tony Degg from the RAF. Winner for the 'Seniors' was Noel Green (Nett) and Tony Laslett (Gross). Once again the inimitable style of Randi Steel from Lefkara took the Ladies Blue Wave Open championships, adding her name to the Club's Winner's Board for the tenth time. Her husband, Chris, claims all the credit; it was he who taught her how to play the game.
With golfers flying in from the UK and across Cyprus, one even arrived from the USA, the Festival kicked off celebrations and golf events that merged into the annual, end of season championships.
This year's Captain of the Golf Club, Tom Watson, in his speech at the Club Championship's Prize presentation, paid tribute to the members, their guests, sponsors and the competitors who had made the event so successful. So good that he suggested that the club should celebrate its anniversary every year and called for planning to begin for 2015.
Once again, for the ninth time, Cyprus Airways provided generous and practical sponsorship, as did the Blue Wave Restaurant and D. Mandilas Car Sales Ltd both on Dhekelia Road. Their vital support was essential to make this special event the success it was.
It wasn't all golf however, the highlight of the 50th Anniversary event was the 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner and Dance organised by Peter Parish and held at Lordos Beach Hotel. Over 120 attended the Ball including Dhekelia base commander Lt Col Kevin Grantham and Dick Edwards, a former Texas oilman.
Both the 'Open' and the American Masters have their jacket presentations; Dhekelia has its own version. Six years ago Dick Edwards from Houston was the man who presented the original, salmon-pink, jacket to the club to be awarded annually to the overall champion of the three-day competition.
At 90, Dick is still flying in from Houston for the 'Dhekelia Open' for the challenge and fun of playing and enjoying the course.
This year it was Tony Laslett who had the honour of donning the jacket.
