NEW YORK -- Major General Kristin Lund of Norway was on Monday named new UNFICYP commander, becoming the first woman to head a UN peacekeeping operation. She takes up her duties on August 13, replacing major general Chao Liu from China. Fifth six year old Lund has a 34 year career in the military, both at national and international level. She has served in the Norwegian HQ from 2007 to 2009. In 2009 she was the first woman promoted to major general and headed the Norwegian national guard and was also responsible for veteran affairs. She has served with UN peacekeeping operations in Lebanon and the former Yugoslavia and also took part in Operation Desert Storm in 1991, and also served in Afghanistan.
