The Health Ministry on Tuesday warned the public not to purchase or consume a specific brand of smoked salmon trout pieces after a sample was found to contain high levels of dangerous bacteria.
According to an official announcement, Listeria monocytogenes was found in higher levels than is considered permissible by national and EU law in a sample of 5 Oceans smoked salmon trout pieces. The packaged fish is produced in Cyprus.
The batch found to be affected has a 29/05/2014 use by date and the fish is being sold in 100g packages, the Public Health Service’s announcement said.
The company distributing the product has been notified and instructed to immediately withdraw it from the market.
Consumers who have already purchased the fish should not eat it and instead immediately return it to the shop they got it from.
The Health Services and Veterinary Services are also cooperating on checks being carried out where the fish is produced and packaged.
