Internationally-renowned actress Whoopi Goldberg has thrown her backing behind Cyprus’ first gay pride parade to be held in Nicosia on May 31.
Her message came as the Cyprus Christian Orthodox Movement said they would be organising a counter-demonstration on the same day and at the same location.
The Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus has slammed the planned march saying that the word of God "condemns homosexuality" and considers it "a degradation and a sickness".
The church came under attack on Tuesday from human rights organisation Aequitas for comments it said violated the premise of non-discrimination and human rights.
Goldberg’s comments can be seen in a Youtube video uploaded by journalist Charalambos Mavromichalis.
The gay pride is being held under the auspices of the Municipality of Nicosia and has the support of foreign diplomatic mission including the US which will be flying the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) flag at its embassy in Nicosia.
Goldberg congratulated Cyprus’ gay community for “coming out from under that rock.” She said the church should know better since God never turns his back on anyone.
