US comedian, actress and talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres has taken the surprise use of her high school photo in a Greek-Cypriot soap opera in her stride.
The star’s senior yearbook photo was used to depict the long-lost love of Giorgos Zenios’s character in a recent episode of popular Ant-1 series ‘Brousco.’
In a recent instalment of her hit talk show ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show,’ DeGeneres played the clip from the soap, telling audiences it had been brought to her attention by a Florida-based Greek fan of both ‘Brousco’ and her show.
DeGeneres joked that she had been surprised by the use of her photo, joking that she could not speak the language but “I know my hair is a Greek tragedy.”
She said she had been unable to get her hair to look how she wanted on the day the photo was taken but was not too concerned as she never thought a year book photo from a school in a small Texas town would ever get this kind of exposure.
Asking: “Anyone out there who watches this show, people from Greece, John Stamos, whoever” to let her know what was going on in the soap, DeGeneres also quipped: “I don’t want to spoil the ending but we are never, ever, ever getting back together.”
By 11.30am (Cyprus time) Wednesday 43,088 people on the talk show’s Facebook page had liked the clip. There were 4,966 shares and 1,652 comments.
Responding to DeGeneres via Twitter, Brousco’s producer, director and star Andreas Georgiou said: “Dear Ellen, my name is Andreas Georgiou and I’m the producer, director and leading actor of the Greek soap “Brousco”.
Furthermore to the info of your part in our show, you must know that you are a senseless, cold blooded mother of two…Your have two twin sons that you have to meet.. Also, you own a wine company. Don’t u think it’s high time you met your sons:)”
Actor and co-producer Koullis Nicolaou also told Ant-1 Cyprus news that the photo had been downloaded in haste, in a rare rushed moment in the usually careful production of the show and that, while they had not been aware the woman in the photo was a celebrity, Georgiou had thought her appearance and expression perfectly captured the role of ‘Helga.’
Ant-1 describes Brousco as “a romantic and passionate love story. The love of two young people, Achilleas from CypruS and Melina from Crete, could be based on the timeless story of Romeo and Juliet. This is a modern adaptation of the original myth, telling the story of a great love.”
The series is filmed in Cyprus and Crete and has a cast of both Greek and Greek Cypriot actors.
