NICOSIA- A 50-year-old businessman will spend an additional two months behind bars on top of an existing prison sentence for a 2001 crime that saw him forge a stolen cheque to pay for an €8,000 party.
Nicosia District Court on Wednesday added the extra time to the prison sentence the businessman, convicted of similar crimes, has almost completed.
Although aware of the crime when the man was first sentenced, the court at the time decided not to take this cheque wrong-doing into account but to re-examine it once his initial sentence was complete.
Passing sentence on Wednesday, Judge Doros Theodorou said he believed the case could have been included in the earlier sentencing. He also said he agreed with the prosecution’s opinion this sentence should be passed to reflect a clean criminal record.
The authorities do not believe the man was responsible for stealing the cheque book from which he forged the €8,000 cheque.
Theodorou also condemned crimes involving cheques noting the victims of such wrongdoing were usually innocent bystanders.
