KISA Executive Director Doros Polykarpou was on Thursday arrested by police officers at the gates of Menoyia Detention Centre for allegedly failing to pay a municipal fine of €160.
Polykarpou’s arrest was confirmed by a police press office representative while a spokesman of the anti-racism NGO told The Cyprus Daily the owed funds were a Nicosia Municipality fine dating back to 2007.
The spokesman said the NGO doubted the jurisdiction of officers at the Detention Centre in this type of case.
“It appears to be motivated by vindictiveness for KISA’s efforts to improve conditions at the centre,” the spokesman said.
It remained unknown whether Polykarpou would remain in custody after his arrest.
Larnaca District Court in 2012 acquitted Polykarpou of any criminal responsibility in relation to violent events which marred the celebration of diversity and multiculturalism at the Rainbow Festival in Larnaca in November 2010.
The verdict issued by the Larnaca District Court pointed out that the prosecution had failed to prove that any criminal offence had been committed by Polykarpou.
