Shared bicycles for rent are due to return to the streets of Nicosia with a new company from Greece taking over the previous bike renting service.
The previous service has been suspended for some time but, with BrainBox Technology taking over, the new service is due to launch from Monday.
The municipalities of the wider Nicosia area participate in the scheme with the new service operating in three stages until the designated area is covered by September.
Nicosia Municipality transportation expert Nasos Kolyvas said: “We want to develop a cycling awareness. The residents of Nicosia have begun to get more active, they are organising events and, as Nicosia Municipality, we want to help.”
The bicycle renting network will be strengthened through the creation of stations at central points including Eleftheria Square and in parking areas while existing rental points will also be improved, Kolyvas said.
Regular users will be given access to an electronic card while visitors and less regular users will be able to use the system with their credit cards.
The name of the network will remain ‘Podilato en drasei’ (Bicycle in action) while more information on registration, use of the system and the positions of new rental stations can be found at http://nikosia.easybike.com.cy. The charge will be €1 per hour.
The system will be fully automated and the bicycles will be managed by specialised software while the rental stations will be monitored by CCTV systems.
