A fashion show will be held on Saturday, June 7 in aid of human trafficking victims with proceeds going to Freedom Dolls Initiative to support their assistance to victims of this crime on the island.
The fashion show – which takes place at the Flamingo Beach Hotel, Makenzie at 7pm - is being held by Nifty Thrifty. The thrift/charity shop, based in Oroklini, has been open for three years and holds an annual fashion show in aid of one charity per year, with the first two shows supporting the village’s dog pound and refugees respectively.
The show features 25 models who have all volunteered their services, and range from age three to 83. They include UCLAN students and Nifty Thrifty customers, amongst others, and will be photographed by Aprhodite’s Eye Photography.
All the clothing featured in the fashion show will all be auctioned off at the end of the evening, raising further funds for Freedom Dolls who aim to open a half-way house for victims and their children later this year. Included in the clothing are several brand new wedding dresses, valued at over €6,000 each, evening gowns and summer clothing – all new. As owner of Nifty Thrifty – Nicola Smith – explains: “We have many people donating items to the shop in aid of charity, including businesses that have forced to close down due to the recession. All the clothing and jewellery featured in the show will be auctioned off at the end and there is some stunning stuff.”
Funds will also be raised through the sale of raffle tickets with many prizes donated by the community, including meals at various restaurants, a skydive, jewellery, beauty and spa treatments and more.
Nicola is also chairman of Freedom Dolls and has had first-hand experience dealing with human trafficking victims: “I have worked with human trafficking victims in both the UK and Cyprus for over 15 years and have seen what it does to the women. The island has a horrendous problem but not enough people are actually aware of the issue. There are thousands of women who have been trafficked to the island and they do not have anywhere to go which is why we want to set up the half-way house.”
Tickets cost €15, which includes a full buffet. They can be purchased from Nifty Thrifty, Flamingo Beach Hotel, Tandem Hair Dressing Salon (Dhekelia Road) or by contacting: 96490018, as can raffle tickets. Semi-formal attire is required on the night.
