NICOSIA - President Demetris Christofias has extended his congratulations to US President Barack Obama for his re-election.
The full text of his message is:
“Please accept my most sincere congratulations on the occasion of your re-election as President of the United States of America, as well as the sincere greetings of the people of the Republic of Cyprus to the friendly people of the United States of America for prosperity and progress.
Your re-election comes at a time when the effects of the economic crisis are deeply felt throughout the world.
Cyprus, also as Presidency of the Council of the European Union, strongly supports growth and development as a means to overcome the crisis, and I am aware that under your Presidency the United States has focused on job creation as an essential component towards this end. Within the European Union, but also the world-over, people look to the United States as a key partner in collectively addressing the immense challenges burdening citizens and states, and we must all stand together to ensure peace, democracy, human rights, poverty-eradication, economic and social development, environmental sustainability and prosperity for all.
The Republic of Cyprus also looks forward to the further strengthening of our excellent bilateral relations at all levels. I would like to reiterate our deeply-felt gratitude to the United States of America for its unwavering support of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of the Republic of Cyprus, including Cyprus’ sovereign right to explore and exploit hydrocarbons in its Exclusive Economic Zone.
Excellency, both you and Vice President Joseph Biden have affirmed your support of our efforts to reach a bizonal, bicommunal, federal solution of the Cyprus problem, as defined in the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions. We are deeply thankful for this, especially as the United States, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, plays a vital role as regards the negotiations for a solution, but also in connection to the preservation of a strong and efficient peace-keeping force in Cyprus, as long as the abnormal situation in this country continues.
Wishing you every success in your duties, please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration, along with my best wishes for health and prosperity.”
