NICOSIA - Nicosia Thursday condemned the 29th anniversary of the unilateral declaration of independence in the occupied north, with the government pledging to continue efforts to reunite the island.
At the same time, the north marked the occasion with celebrations in the presence of Turkish officials, a military parade and aerobatic shows by the Turkish Air Force.
The government said in a written statement: “Turkey’s intransigence and provocative moves, which cause disappointment, will not distract us from the main goal, which is a solution to the Cyprus problem
“The Greek Cypriot side consistently continues efforts to reunite the island, based on principles and the Cyprus Republic’s sovereign rights,” it added.
Students took to the streets protesting the November 15, 1983 declaration with many reaching the Ledra Palace checkpoint where they shouted anti-occupation slogans.
