AYIA NAPA – Ayia Napa Mayor and well-known hotelier Antonis Tsokkos died this morning after previously being taken ill.
According to reports, the 60-year-old complained of breathing difficulties and weakness but died before the doctor arrived at his home.
An autopsy is set to take place to determine the exact cause of death.
An election for a new mayor is now set to take place within 45 days with the deputy mayor stepping in until that time.
Tsokkos was born in Ayia Napa in 1953 and would later go on to study accounting and nautical studies in London. Upon his return to Cyprus, he focused primarily on the tourism industry helping Ayia Napa to blossom into one of Europe’s most popular tourist resorts.
The Tsokkos family own many hotels and hotel apartments in and around Ayia Napa.
In 2011, he was re-elected as Ayia Napa chairman receiving 77.72% of the votes.
He leaves behind a wife and two children.
