NICOSIA – AEK Larnaca and Apollon Limassol secured the last two places in Thursday’s Cyprus Coca-Cola Cup draw for the quarterfinals after battling through in their second leg ties on Wednesday night against Olympiakos Nicosia and Nea Salamina respectively.
Leading 1-0 from the first leg in Larnaca, Ran Ben Shimon’s AEK were made to work in Nicosia as Italian striker Gaetano Monachello(2) and Pieros Sotiriou bolted the hosts into a 3-2 halftime lead. Olympiakos threw everything in attack in the second half but Nassir Maachi scored on the hour to clinch his side a 3-3 draw and the ticket into the next round.
There were nervous moments for hosts Apollon too as they were made to sweat at home to Nea Salamina despite winnign the first leg 1-0 in Larnaca.
Spanish striker Roberto calmed the Limassol nerves on 66 minutes as he scored with a good header to secure a 2-0 aggregate win for the six-time Cup winners.
The draw for the quarterfinals will take place at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia at 12pm on Thursday.
Cup holders Omonia are in the pot along with undefeated league leaders Anorthosis Famagusta and title holders AEL – who previously knocked out APOEL. The other teams in the draw are AEP, Ayia Napa, Enosis Neon Paralimniou as well as AEK and Apollon who won their Cup ties on Wednesday night.
