PARALIMNI - A 41-year old Bulgarian woman who gave birth alone to a baby she said was stillborn is under arrest at Famagusta Hospital in Paralimni on suspicion of manslaughter.
The woman, who has been in Cyprus for four months, was taken to hospital by her employer on Saturday suffering from uncontrolled bleeding.
She is reported to be out of danger, but remains in hospital where she was placed under arrest, initially for hiding a birth and then yesterday midday on suspicion of manslaughter.
The drama unfolded after the woman told doctors that she had given birth, but that the baby was dead.
Police visited her home at Sotira where she worked as a farm worker and found the dead baby girl wrapped in towels and sheets, in the dustbin.
State pathologist Eleni Antoniou who carried out a post mortem on the baby on Sunday morning said that it appeared that the baby had been born alive, but said that that this would be established beyond any doubt once more definitive tests were carried out.
The woman says the child was stillborn and that she had never told her employer that she was pregnant.
