Apollon’s reward for reaching the Europa League group stage was a tough draw in Group A where they are pitted against strong opposition from Spain, Germany and Switzerland.
The Limassol side entered Friday’s draw after an impressive 4-1 thrashing away to Lokomotiv Moscow to win the play-off 5-2 on aggregate but they now have a daunting task to get out of the group.
Apollon will need get results against Spain’s Villarreal, Germany’s Mönchengladbach and Swiss outfit Zürich to progress.
The first round of Europa League group games begin on September 18 and the last lot are on December 11.
Marcelino García, Villarreal coach said: "We have to give a good showing in the group; they're not excessively long trips. We are delighted to be in the competition."
"I don't know much about the three opponents - Mönchengladbach a little more than the others. We will go into each game with respect and wanting to win. We want to get as far as we can in the competition, and irrespective of the opponent, we want to start in the best way possible. For Marcos Gullón [ex-Villarreal, now at Apollon] it will be a special game."
