NICOSIA – Cypriots on Monday protested against a proposed tax on deposits as part of a 17 billion euro bailout agreement, urging parliament not to approve the measure.
Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the House of Representatives on Monday afternoon where MPs were initially set to vote on the bill. The House meeting was postponed for Tuesday at 6.00pm. They carried banners reading Europe was for its people not its banks and shouted slogans against the bailout agreement. Many of them then marched to the Presidential Palace where they are continuing their protest. Earlier one of the demonstrators heading to the Presidential Palace climbed on to the German Embassy building, removed the German flag and threw it to the ground. It was picked up by polic, the Cyprus News Agency reported..
