Police are on the hunt for a team of armed robbers who launched a daring daylight raid on a money transfer van in Nicosia yesterday and managed to get away with €25,000.
Speaking to the media, police spokesman Thomas Efthymiou confirmed the authorities were looking for four men in connection with the robbery.
At around 8.45am a money transfer van was cut off by two cars on the Menikou to Akaki road. Hooded men armed with G3 assault riffles exited out of the vehicles and threatened the van driver into handing over the cash bags he was transporting. The robbers then set one of their vehicles on fire and quickly fled the scene in the other car.
Residents alerted the police who set up roadblocks in the area but not fast enough to catch the assailants.
Efthymiou said the robbery had the hallmarks of a professional job while the authorities were examining similarities to previous heists.
“Were are investigating similarities between this robbery and a similar heist against an Electricity Authority of Cyprus cash transfer van in Nicosia last year,” said the police official.
