WASHINGTON - Travel bans and asset freezes were slapped onto some of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest allies yesterday as the US and Europe expressed their anger at Moscow’s moves to take over Crimea,
The rebel Crimean parliament had earlier declared the peninsula independent of Ukraine as a first step towards becoming part of Russia, as demanded in a referendum held on Sunday.
US officials also said that they were looking at more Putin ‘cronies’ to target in their efforts to get him to step back from the takeover.
